Transactional Analysis

The International Transactional Analysis Association defines TA as this;

“Transactional Analysis is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change”.

Transactional Analysis was founded by the late psychiatrist Dr Eric Berne.  He was a practicing psychiatrist in  California who sought to develop a method for group psychotherapy treatment, that could be easily understood by people who were not educated in the mysterious world of psychiatric speech.  To this end we give him our deepest thanks.  Unfortunately, Dr Berne died in 1970, but his legacy lives on through practicing Transactional Analysis Therapists the world over.

In its study of personality TA gives an idea of the structure people have at a deep psychological level.  The main model for this is the “Ego State” model.  This model is used to present a theory of how people function and how they are mentally processing in the depths of their minds.

TA further presents a theory of child development and how as children we make decisions on how life is and our place within it (life script).  Once firmly established and believed in the depths of our unconscious mind we then replay these child decisions and beliefs throughout our lives as a means to solve problems and get our needs met.  We will repeat this process even when it causes us pain, or meets persistently with failure.
